Chapter Eleven

Paris

BY THE TIME we landed at Paris-Orly airport, two bottles of champagne were empty, and I sprawled snoring in my seat. At least that’s what Evika told me. We’d been in the air for almost thirteen hours. I slept for twelve of them.

A limousine met us on the runway and whisked us away to the place we’d be staying. We drove about an hour from the heart of Paris to Maincy and then made one big swing into a driveway. My heart stood still.

A majestic chateau glowed golden in the dark of night. A full moon hovered over the grounds like a spotlight. Roman told us it was a seventeenth century chateau called Vaux Le Vicomte. Gold lights outlined spectacular gardens silvered by moonlight, making them appear like giant pieces of jewelry laid out on the expansive grounds.

We debarked from the limousine into a circular salon. The walls were a pale pink marble, the columns were swirls of gray and beige marble, and the floor was a large checkerboard of white and black marble. Massive windows dazzled with reflections, as light splashed across each small square of glass. I envisioned couples waltzing around the grand rotunda, handsome men wearing tuxedos, and beautiful women with ball gowns swirling around like exotic birds.

A half dozen men and women dressed in black and white servant uniforms took our luggage, showed us to our rooms, and gave us maps and agendas. The atmosphere gave the impression of a professional convention, albeit a super deluxe one, rather than a simple get-together to honor the head Balthazar. I read the calligraphy-covered parchment that served as our agenda and noticed we were expected to dress for a formal dinner to be held at midnight tonight.

Our rooms were together in one section of the chateau. Roman’s room and mine were adjoining. The connecting door was open, and Roman gave me a wicked smile full of sensual promise from his side. That smile took me off-guard. I knew what he was thinking, and my nipples hardened on the spot. Damned Nightkind magician.

A soft knocking at the door distracted me from my sensual musings. I walked over and opened the door to find a pretty young woman wearing a stereotypical French maid’s uniform. It was short, black, with a white apron tied around her waist. To top it off, a jaunty little lace cap sat atop her blond curls. She actually curtsied, saying, “ Bonsoir Madam. I will be your personal maid during your stay here. My name is Yvonne. Allow me to unpack your things and select a gown for dinner?”

“You speak English very well, Yvonne,” I said as her English had no discernible accent.

“ Oui. I lived in America while attending college,” she said with a dimpled smile as she entered my room, manhandled my heavy suitcases, and started unpacking with purpose.

“Oh, madam, these are tres chic!” She exclaimed as she pulled out piece after piece of clothing. Roland had directed the packing of my suitcases so I didn’t know what they contained.
